The CPB/WGBH National Center for Accessible Media (NCAM) is a research and development facility that works to make media accessible to underserved populations such as disabled persons, minority-language users, and people with low literacy skills.

The CPB/WGBH National Center for Accessible Media (NCAM) Web Access Project has developed and distributed a generic, public-domain Web Access Symbol. Web site designers can use the symbol to indicate that efforts have been made to accommodate the needs of deaf, hard-of-hearing, blind and visually impaired users. We are proud to display this logo.

Accessibility Design Features

Images

Images on a Web page must have alternate representations to be universally accessible. Each image on the site has alternative text, known as ALT text, which describes the function and or visual content of a graphic. ALT-tags are used to provide brief descriptions of the image that the browser presents instead of the image. Where appropriate a full picture description is available in addition to ALT text.

Navigation
Top Navigation Bar
The graphical navigation menu on the top of each page facilitates navigation through the main sections of the website. Each button is a link to the beginning of the section. When in a particular section, the button appears 'highlighted' indicating the chosen section.

Left Navigation Text
The textual navigation menu on the left side of each page facilitates navigation within each section. The links in the textual navigation menu navigate to the subsections within each section.

Bottom Text Links
The links to the site's main sections are duplicated in text at the bottom of each page. The links to the About this Site and Notice of Privacy Practices appear only in the bottom text links.

Table of Contents

The Table of Contents lists all of the pages on the website and their relationship to one another. It is accessible from the Top Navigation Bar and the text links at the bottom of each page and is in text only format.

Active Links

Words that link to other topics or pages are underlined and  change color when selected.

Links to External Websites

Many links to external websites are available but navigational links are no longer provided. External links open in the same browser window. To return to the Society's Assets, Inc. website, click the back button on your browser.

Index and Return to Links

Each section contains an index which functions like a  table of contents allowing you to link to a specific subsection without having to scroll through undesired material. Longer sections include "Return to" links providing a quick jump back to the index.

Frames

Frames are used for dividing the window into regions that are scrolled independently. Each frame has a title to describe its function. Text only versions are provided for those whose software does not support frames.

Tables

Tables found in this web site are used for positioning text and graphics in rows and columns. Simple tables do not require an alternate presentation.

Text
Text blocks are short and succinct. Spacing between lines was increased to improve readability.
