Peer Support

Volunteers and staff members with a disability provide individual or group support.  Meetings may be formal or informal, taking place in the home, an office conference room, or over the telephone.  The peer volunteer or staff member can provide consumers with practical information, encouragement, and input so the consumer can increase his/her independence while living with a disability.  A peer could be considered a role model.  He/she is also a good listener who helps consumers deal with barriers or frustrations related to living independently with a disability.

Staff also provide information about support and self-help groups currently meeting in the area.
